Each sponsored home requires a volunteer to serve as a House Captain, or the main project lead person. This individual is responsible for coordinating the renovation projects to be completed in the home and for serving as the primary sponsor contact with RT*MC staff.

In the weeks leading up to National Rebuilding Day, which takes place on the last Saturday in April, the House Captain works with the homeowner to determine which projects will be undertaken by the volunteers on Event Day. The House Captain also communicates with any skilled tradesman who will be working in the home, compiles the materials lists, and organizes pick-up and inventory before Event Day.

On National Rebuilding Day, the House Captain oversees all of the technical aspects of the renovation project. The House Captain directs volunteers in completing the renovation projects, and may work with both skilled and unskilled volunteers. While the work scopes vary from home to home, typically volunteers are involved in painting, landscaping, and minor electrical, carpentry and plumbing projects.

Serving as a RT*MC House Captain is a great way to meet people and make a huge impact in the life of a Chicagoland homeowner and in the greater Chicagoland community. Additionally, RT*MC staff are there to assist House Captains in planning projects, and provide training and support to ensure that all volunteers have a successful, rewarding project.

Overview of House Captain Responsibilities:

  • Visit the home and define the work scope
  • Compile the materials order list
  • Complete the skilled labor request form
  • Organize materials pick-up and inventory
  • Coordinate room/task leaders
  • Make all key decisions on event day, including approving petty cash expenditures
  • Be the last person to leave the house

Volunteer Comments
"I wandered into this event alone, wondering if I would possibly know any other participants in the event this year. Not only did I reconnect with two friends from college, but made a few new friends that day as well! Our homeowner made the day a lot of fun too, telling us stories about the home and her life in Chicago."

"I only hope the other homes had so such fantastic help. This crew was working incredibly hard all day, ripping apart the kitchen, bath and stairs and plumbing...and were still working hard late into the afternoon. Everyone was extremely dedicated to a good they brought humor and success to the entire project."
