RT*MC is part of a national nonprofit program which sponsors National Rebuilding Day across the country on the last Saturday in April. Every year we select a different Chicago neighborhood and south suburb in which to provide free home repair for elderly, disabled, or low income individuals.

On April 26th, 2008 Rebuilding Together * Metro Chicago volunteers repaired and made improvements to 74 homes and 5 community facilities, and landscaped 3 projects in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago and Markham, Illinois. An additional 5 non-profit facilities received repairs at Give Back Day events held during the summer.

In 2008, RT*MC accomplished:

• 2960 sq. feet of insulation installed
• 576 feet of weather-stripping added
• 280 interior rooms painted & patched
• 213 light fixtures replaced & repaired
• 209 compact florescent bulbs installed
• 197 cabinets replaced & repaired
• 139 steps replaced & repaired
• 137 windows replaced
• 87 railings replaced & repaired
• 78 sinks installed & repaired
• 50 toilets fixed
• 29 rotting floors rebuilt
• All in 1 day of work!

The Need for Rebuilding Together:

• 46% of new homeowners have low and moderate income
• The home ownership rate of seniors is 80%
• 92% of retired people prefer to age in place
• Falls are the leading cause of death from injury to people over 65 years of age
• More than 1.45 million elderly households lack some of the basic elements of housing security, such as complete plumbing or a reliable source of heat
