History of Rebuilding Together with Christmas in April

Rebuilding Together * Metro Chicago is an affiliate of Rebuilding Together, and one of over 250 such chapters throughout the country. The national organization began in Midland, Texas in 1972, when a group of neighbors joined together to make repairs to the homes of those that could not afford or were not physically able to make the repairs themselves. The original name was coined after an elderly homeowner walked into her home to see the improvements that were made. Thrilled with what she saw, she exclaimed, "I just can't believe this is happening! It's like Christmas in April!"

Rebuilding Together * Metro Chicago originated in 1991 after Cook County Government officials sought support from the City of Chicago and private and public corporations to help initiate a long-lasting partnership to improve the homes and neighborhoods of low-income, elderly and disabled residents. Since then, RT*MC's Board of Directors has been successful in greatly expanding our organization while continuing in their efforts to strengthen and build low-income communities.

It is because of these accomplishments that our honorary Co-chair, Mayor Richard M. Daley, has recognized Rebuilding Together as "one of the most cost-effective housing programs in Chicago."
